If you’re seriously considering investing in this Skydio 2 Drone, I’d recommend that you read the review all the way through so that you can make an informed decision. If you’re already familiar with the Skydio brand, then you have an idea of what makes this drone different.
There’s really no debate that Skydio has the most advanced obstacle avoidance capabilities and the drone market. And it’s really not even close. So, let’s take a deeper look into the Skydio 2.
Autonomous Flying, Skydio 2 Drone Review
There’s simply no other drone that can accomplish what this drone can in terms of autonomous flying and tracking instead of the 1200/720 P cameras the Skydio 2 uses 64K cameras each with a 200-degree field of view lens to create a 3D model of the world.
And it uses the six overlapping feeds to be able to navigate avoid obstacles and predict where the subject is going. You’ll notice that the rear props are facing up and the front ones are facing down. And the three cameras on top and the three cameras on the bottom have an unobstructed view to be able to create a complete 360 model.
Now, each camera also has this little notch next to it, to protect it from being damaged or scratched. You should treat these cameras with the same level of care that you would the main camera and make sure that they’re clean before you fly.
The Skydio 2 now has 45 megapixels of data. So clearly another leap forward. They also upgraded from the Nvidia TX 1 to the TX 2 chip, which allowed for a much more advanced algorithm. The AI of this drone is very advance.
It seems to be better than other drone when it’s predicting or anticipating movement.
One limitation of the Skydio 2 is low light flying since the drone uses the six cameras for navigation and obstacle, avoidance and needs to be able to see. And since the system can’t be turned off, the drone simply won’t take off.
The drone shouldn’t crash that’s their priority. And if you fly within their guidelines, they have a pretty serious warranty where they’ll fix it for free.
Camera and Image Quality, Skydio 2 Drone Review
The new camera on the Skydio 2 has a 20-millimeter full frame equivalent field of view and an aperture of 2.8. It gives us 4K 60 and standard or HDR versus 4k 30 standard.
We also get 1080 up to 120 frames per second versus 60 frames per second on the Skydio 2. And you will be very impressed with the image quality in terms of sharpness, dynamic range and color rendering.
Skydio 2 had included a flat color profile, even if it wasn’t a log, but just something like neutral on Canon so that we get a softer, less contrast and less saturated footage to start with, that would have been really cool.
And who knows, maybe that’s something they can add with a firmware update. Finally, you can also shoot 12 megapixels stills in both JPEG and raw.
And again, the image quality is quite good. Next, if you use the Arwen, you’ll notice that the gimbal on the Skydio 2 has improved. We now have a three-axis gamble instead of the two axis that we saw in the older model.
So, the Skydio 2 did not rotate on the yard access, which is used for panning. This wasn’t a big deal because the Arwen 1 could account for that by rotating the body. But the new gimbal is more versatile and now it can pan left to right to more effectively track of subject and keep it in frame.
Portable Drone Skydio 2 Drone Review
Neither drone can be folded, but the R one was 13 by 16 inches. And the Skydio 2 is 8.8 by 10.7 inches. So, it’s significantly smaller. It’s about the size of Maverick pro platinum one extended.
Now of course the Maverick pro can be folded and you can get a much more compact and easier to transport configuration.
This can be more of an issue for someone, because the case just didn’t fit in. The Skydio 2 has a much smaller, hard shell case, which comes with a shoulder strap and it fits the drone spare propellers charging cable, and then either two batteries or one battery and the wall charger also because it’s smaller.
You can get that case in most of your bags. Now, as far as weight, the Skydio 2 is of course lighter at 1.7 pounds.
Battery Life Skydio 2 Drone Review
We’re looking at fully autonomous flight at up to 36 miles per hour. It’s also significant improvement from the 25 miles an hour. Another advantage is it’s a skydio 2, is a lot quieter.
Now, as far as actual flight, we’ve already discussed the obstacle avoidance and tracking, which in general is spectacular.
There is an important option for height floor in the app, which changes the behavior of the skydio 2. So, if you have it enabled, it will stay at least eight feet above the ground while tracking a subject. So, it’s a safer way to flight. Now, the downside is that the drone won’t go under low obstacle.
So we may have to fly over branch or a tree when it’s falling you instead of under now, if you deceased, able to hide floor, then it can fly closest the ground and has better tracking in more challenging environments, but you need to be more mindful of your surroundings.
Battery, Skydio 2 Drone Review
So, each battery is rated for 23 minutes of flight time versus 16 minutes on the Arwen. The battery must be charged in the drone using in the provided USB cable.
So, if you have two batteries, you’ll need to take the one out and put the next one in, in order to charge it. Then of course you can charge a while you’re flying. Now, if you multiple batteries, you should also pick up a dual charger and this lets you charge two batteries with one USB cable.
And it also has a USBC pass through, so, you can charge another device like your phone.
Controller and the Beacon
You can use the app to fly the drone if you needed to using the onscreen controls, but it isn’t great to get the drone out of trouble and then back to a safer area or to position it for landing. But you couldn’t get any cinematic shots with it because the controls are clunky. And again, the range is very limited.
So, Scotty has solved both of these issues with two optional components. The first is the controller and the second is called the beacon. The controller is borrowed from Paris and it’s a sky controller three. It’s a medium sized controller. It’s pretty comfortable to hold an overall.
As far as range, the controller is rated for 3.5 kilometers or 2.17 miles. If you fly using the controller, turn off phone’s Wi-Fi while you’re flying. If you’re flying manually, you’re still getting complete obstacle avoidance up, down left, right front back. It doesn’t matter. It just won’t fly into objects.
The next issue had to do with the range of the phones wifi. If you’re a separated the drone to a distance that was beyond your phone’s wifi, it would be stuck. You you’d have to go back to it until you got close enough to control it with the sky too.
We have a new optional accessory called the beacon, which is little handheld gizmo that wirelessly connects to the drone and then extends the range up to 1.5 kilometers or 0.9, three miles. And you can basically control a drone using the beacon instead of having them mess with your phone.
And maybe the most important feature of the beacon is that it enables GPS tracking. If the Skydio 2 loses visual contact with the subject. like let’s say, you are riding under a tree. Now the drone will use the GPS and the beacon to continue to track its position until Silicon regained visual contact.
So basically, you connect the beacon to the drone and then your phone to the beacon. Some of the really exciting improvements in the latest from where up they have to do with the beacon.
App of Skydio 2 Drone Review
Next, we want to talk about the app, it has very simple interface. And there’s basically no curve. It’s really straightforward. It’s not as sophisticated as something like what you get with the DJI drones. You will be able to launch land position to drone where you want, and then select the subject for tracking.
You can also select skills, which are things like motion track, which will have the drone identifying and track a subject. And then you can select one of eight positions around the subject.
So, you can have it follow you from behind or lead you from the front. You can have it on either side of you or at four different 45 degrees, three angles. And in this mode, as you’ve changed directions, the drone response that change and then moves accordingly.
And this is where that predictive quality that I mentioned earlier is important because if the drone can make an educated guess yes, regarding where you might go next, it can frame that shot better.
Another option and is that you can select fixed track, which will always film you from the same angle, regardless of the direction of your movement. We also have something called orbit where the Skydio 2 will fly around you and circle and track you even while you’re moving. And then again, you can dictate the height and the distance cable will fly between any two predetermined points.
Why Skydio 2
If you want to capture any kind of outdoor sports or activity, the Skydio 2 is a no brainer. I wouldn’t even really consider another drone at this point. The fact that you can hand launch and land in the mountains and have it followed you while you’re skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, or any other similar is just ridiculous.
There just isn’t anything else on the market that can get you the type of footage that the Skydio 2 will give. It was the skydio 2 drone review. if you consider it not much fruitful then check other drone Click Here.
Hope you find this Skydio 2 Drone Review fruitful and you have got decision whether it is worth buying or not.
